The Sandpiper Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from several Thorn-Clarke owned vineyards. This wine is produced in a ‘fruit forward’ style with 12 months in primarily French oak; the wine is ready to be enjoyed now and will comfortably cellar up to 5 years. This Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon displays great lift and intensity of fruit whilst retaining Cabernet varietal character.

This is a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon thanks to American oak maturtion. Generous yet structured with abundant cassis flavours, subtle hints of mint and spice transitioning to a long, polished finish.

At release, the wine has a deep ruby red colour to the centre with a youthful purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of dark blackcurrant fruit along with subtle choc-mint and a hint of eucalypt. On the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of cassis and blackberry fruit along with attractive oak characters of cigar box and tobacco leaf. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated, elegant tannins providing structure and an intense, persistent length to the finish.

Richard Hamilton is a prestige McLaren Vale producer with some of the oldest vineyards in the region. Its intense, complex wines are much sought-after. As Halliday says, “Richard Hamilton has outstanding estate vineyards, some of great age, all fully mature. An experienced and skilled winemaking team has allowed the full potential of those vineyards to be realised.” He gives this lovely wine an impressive 92pts: “Estate-grown on four vineyard blocks, 6-7 days on skins, then pressed, part to finish its fermentation in new French oak. No more than medium-bodied, the fruit-oak-tannin trifecta is in excellent balance.
